Member of Parliament for Patuakhali-1 constituency, former state minister for Religious Affairs and Patuakhali district unit Awami League president Advocate Shahjahan Mia passed away at around 6 am today at a hospital here. He was 83.
His son Advocate Tarikuzzaman Moni, general secretary of Patuakhali Municipal Awami League, confirmed the matter to BSS saying that he had been suffering from various old age complications for a long time. He was undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) in the capital.
He left behind his wife, three sons, a daughter and a host of family members, friends and political and legal co-workers to mourn his death.
Mia was a lawyer by profession and a prominent politician.
He served as the president of Patuakhali district unit Awami League from 1991 to 2019.
He was elected Member of Parliament from Patuakhali-1 Constituency as an Awami League candidate in the seventh, ninth and eleventh national parliament elections.
He served as the State Minister of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the ninth national parliament of 2008.
